University of Melbourne Professor of Epidemiology Tony Blakely said efforts to drive down numbers may be stalling due to a failure to stamp out hospital and aged care outbreaks

Dr Duckett put that down to something that was poorly understood at the time: COVID-19 is largely spread indoors by super-spreaders.

“We phased down too quickly. There was a lot of pressure on the government to phase out the lockdown – that it was going to cost the economy,” he said. "Many hospitals have old buildings and poor engineering controls, creating a hazardous environment for health workers, who may be exposed day in, day out," she said.

Professor MacIntyre backed calls for healthcare workers to be granted access to respirator masks, which offer a higher level of protection than surgical masks and for fit testing to ensure they were effective."The most logical thing to do is throw everything at protecting these workers and stopping the ongoing transmission," she said.

What a useless academiologist this guy is. Do eco 101.

Heard of staf? This is not new 😒

Been saying that for a while. HCW cases are too high and proportion is growing.

Driving 'numbers' to zero is a disastrous and anti science policy

The health workers necks are uncovered and they are not wearing goggles. They are not FULLY protected.

DrKate_Miller Scrimping on healthcare & the safety of those on the frontline IS impacting the economy. All healthcare workers need fitted PPE. We are told there are high rates of mystery cases. Healthcare workers don’t know who is asymptomatic. Therefore ALL should be provided with fitted PPE.

Great article Dana_Adele & LiamMannix!

😡WHY doesn’t EVERYONE in VIC + PPL AIRING OPINIONS😖SIGN UP2 VIC CMO DAILY EMAILS👏😡this👆+ seeing Drs post criteria 4testing always changing & believed close contacts of ppl who test+ can’t get test🤦🏼‍♀️😡Tempted 2add bits RE BOTH fm emails😖PLEASE😰SUBSRIBE & READ✊ ✊EVERYDAY✊

Dr Blakeley is right. Until the HCW ‘secret’ infection problems are eliminated we will see an ongoing significant Covid 19 new infection ‘tail’ that will not drop down to near elimination or stay there. It will keep us on edge. Public health and Infection Control 101.

sigh. it is like because we had accidents killing cyclists, we ban cars from driving. which is not the case. we build bike lanes and educate both drivers and cyclists. instead of managing PPE and high risks areas, you can sit all day waiting for the power ball to drop. good luck.

Can we not manage such low numbers and provide improved protection to frontline workers and the vulnerable? Zero cases hasn’t been achieved anywhere, permanently, and cannot be sustained without living in a bubble.

Another so called expert

No shit Sherlock. This is 95% of daily cases now, but the rest of VIC have draconian rules in place. Just ridiculous.

Public Health Department? Not up to scratch

File under: things that are self evident, but offer no practical solution.

Very interesting. Everyone is waiting for Sunday’s announcements with a degree of dread. Eight week further lockdown recommendation? Wow!

We don't care. The demented need to be shoved back into their own office role and sane people need to take the reins.

The case for COVID-19 'zero': Former health chief says 'smarter, longer' restrictions neededA report from a leading public policy think tank says Australia can drive active COVID-19 cases down to zero through longer and 'smarter' restrictions, with the 'short-term pain' providing greater payoff on the other side. And then what? Are you going to have Australia as a 100 per cent quarantine country? When the northern hemisphere countries are all starting to admit that lockdowns were a failed experiment Won't work. You're trying to convince stupid people to do intelligent things. Won't happen. People are genuinely that stupid, enough to run race, religious and 'rights' agendas during this. Nice thought though 🤷‍♂️

COVID response shouldn’t be a ‘competition between economy and health’ | Sky News AustraliaShadow Education Minister Tanya Plibersek says the coronavirus argument shouldn’t descend into a competition between the economy and health.\n\nIt comes as both Western Australia and Queensland remain steadfast in their approach to keep their respective borders closed.\n\nThe Queensland government have declared it won’t reopen the border with New South Wales until its southern neighbour goes a month without community transmission.\n\nHowever, many are arguing this response is having a detrimental effect on businesses especially in border towns.\n\n“Premiers are doing what they’re doing on the best advice they’ve got,” Ms Plibersek told Sky News host Alan Jones.\n\n“I don’t think we should try and make this a competition between the economy and health”.\n\nLiberal Senator Claire Chandler though said more consideration should be given to small businesses whose “trade is reliant in many cases on open borders”.\n\nImage: Getty tanya_plibersek Long term they are one and the same. As soon as we're a 3rd world country there won't be any health. Apart for government staff of course who are still being paid. Elimination vs 'tight suppression' as Victoria exits lockdownExperts are warn Australia will not be able to eliminate the coronavirus, as the Victoria's residents anxiously watch daily infection numbers gradually decline. I believe the word is manageable. Not impossible. Listen to the Daniel Andrews daily briefings. And stop trying to undermine the effort now we have come this far. Which is exactly what the media did the first time around. Careless & irresponsible. Can’t control the front door to a hotel but they think they can control a virus which has spread across the entire world. Here we go 🤦🏼‍♂️ VictorianCHO: “we want the lowest possible” : “that’s impossible!!” 🤦‍♂️

Victoria records six deaths and 90 new coronavirus cases as state of emergency extendedBreaking Another six Victorians have died from coronavirus as new infections across the state gradually decline. Is anybody else sick of hearing this kind of vague numbers? Have those people had chronic diseases? Low immunity with other medical treatments? More information, proper journalism is what we want. With so many other things requiring journalistic attention, constantly focusing on Victoria to my mind is just lazy and sensationalist reporting. How about some detailed analysis of NSW. Oh wait, that’s an LNP premiere and might require investigation and analysis.
