Exclusive: Health Minister Mark Butler has ordered a rapid review of national health regulator AHPRA following reports in The Age of widespread dysfunction in how complaints are investigated

Butler said AHPRA and the National Boards operate independently under a regulatory and legislative framework that is the responsibility of all states and territories, as well as the Commonwealth.

“I am writing to the Chair of the Health Ministers’ Meeting to put this issue on the agenda at our next meeting, including a rapid review of the response by jurisdictions to previous reviews.”the registration of Perth optometrist David Tidman after he allegedly sexually harassed a teenage patient during two routine eye tests in 2020 and 2021.

There have been successive Senate inquiries into AHPRA’s ability to do its job, which have revealed persistent problems with processing time and transparency for investigations into allegations of medical misconduct. While these inquiries have made a number of recommendations, AHPRA has been slow to implement them.
