Mathias Cormann wasn't meant to be the nation's longest-served finance minister but his departure robs Scott Morrison of a stable, considered adviser at a crucial time | swrighteconomy

Mathias Cormann wasn't meant to be the nation's longest-served finance minister.

When the first Abbott ministry was unveiled, most of the focus turned on the absence of women , Bronwyn Bishop becoming the House Speaker and the move of Robb into the traditional Nationals' portfolio of trade.Cormann was promoted into finance but the import of that move was largely drowned out by the noise surrounding the other issues.

"Cormann understands his place in the solar system. He revels in being the hard-faced Minister for Finance who requires ministers and parliamentary secretaries to justify their spending," he wrote. Cormann had planned this year to record the first federal budget surplus since 2007-08. As a finance minister, there's not much more important than getting the books back into the shape. But the summer's fires and then the coronavirus pandemic destroyed that plan. Instead of a surplus of $5 billion for 2019-20, the government is likely to deliver a deficit of more than $90 billion.

Cormann leaves with several substantial successes, most prominently an overhaul of the GST that has delivered his home state an ongoing source of tax revenue in a deal that does not leave other states worse off.

swrighteconomy Sad great loss

swrighteconomy So he robs Morrison & rewards the rest of us with his departure leaving debts & deficits in his wake...wtf...

swrighteconomy Boo Hoo

swrighteconomy About time! No on is going to hire you in the Corporate World...i dont think.

swrighteconomy I can only remember how the government wasn't listening to good advice.

swrighteconomy Morrison will be glad to see the back of Cormann, another Conservative gone. Lefty, simple Simon Birmingham, will be the walk in replacement.

swrighteconomy Ambassador to where? Quangos?

swrighteconomy Question is what has ScottMorrisonMP done to make him run? Guess we will all find out in October

swrighteconomy Without harping on about it, Cormann inherited the No. 1 performing economy in the world, and departs with Australia at around No. 20 (pre Covid). Hardly a ringing endorsement.

swrighteconomy Wow Murdoch press at its best 😂😂

swrighteconomy Well I won't. While introducing the most feudal of budgets he toked on a big fat cigar knowing full well the austerity of the budget was not necessary. Good riddance, just a pity he doesn't take a few with him.

swrighteconomy 'stable, considered adviser' the SMH is now beyond parody.

swrighteconomy time to be ambassador to Kabul

swrighteconomy Good!
