The mother of fallen jockey Dean Holland says their family should be planning for a wedding, not dealing with the anniversary of his death.
“And then they were meant to get married in December this year. They wanted to wait because they had baby after baby. They wanted to wait so that all the kids could be part of the wedding.“All the lead up and everything is just as bad,” Belinda says. Holland had travelled to the country for a book of rides at Donald on April 24 last year. Tragically, he never made it home.Holland’s coach and mentor James Winks watched the tragedy unfold on TV.
“He’d had that discussion with Lucy that if he got in, they were all going to go. Which was a big move.” Live on, he does. Holland’s mother says she sees her son in all of his four children, but one in particular bears a striking resemblance.“He’s just got no fear. They have got a pool, he’s the first one in there without floaties, he’s just jumping in off the edge. I see a lot of Dean in Luca.”
This year, Kah won the race on a James Cummings-trained three-year-old sprinter Cylinder while wearing the Godolphin royal blue. Holland’s father, Darren, presented her with the trophy. The sight of her shaking their hands and then posing with their father’s trophy was enough to crack the stoutest of veneers. Her career and Holland’s life were forever linked. It brought the iron-willed Kah to tears.
