Fire experts tell the bushfire royal commission that hazard reduction burns can have long-term negative impacts if done incorrectly.

Hazard reduction burns can have long-term negative impacts if done incorrectly, fire experts have told the bushfire royal commission. The bushfire royal commission is focusing on hazard reduction burns in its hearings this weekThe commission was told more resourcing needed to be given to fuel management

"So you may have had a short-term gain for a long-term loss, so understanding the ecology needs to go hand in hand with trying to manage or manipulate the fuels."Fire ecologist Professor David Bowman from the University of Tasmania told the commission that while science does not have all the answers, there were clear benefits to prescribed burning.

"The resources are unlimited for the emergency, we have to move away from that to say that we're trying to optimise within available resources for fuel management," he said. A hazard reduction burn was conducted in the green forest in 2019 but the surrounding bush was not and was reduced to ash in the January 2020 bushfires.
