Astronomers say they may have detected the first planet outside of our galaxy — although no-one will really know for sure for at least another 70 years.

"The discovery of M51-ULS-1b has established that external galaxies host candidate planets," they report. And not everyone is convinced this observation is a planet either. The object, which is roughly the size of Saturn, orbits around a massive star and a smaller dense core of a dead star known as a neutron star, or a black hole.

Astronomers use dips in visible light — known as the transit method — to detect alien planets in our own galaxy,"We are trying to open up a whole new arena for finding other worlds by searching for planet candidates at X-ray wavelengths, a strategy that makes it possible to discover them in other galaxies," said the study's lead author Rosanne Di Stefano of the Center for Astrophysics Harvard & Smithsonian in a statement.

That's because the potential planet takes 70 years to orbit its suns, travelling at a distance that is twice that of Saturn to our sun.For us to see it, it would also have to line up in the right position, at the right time.

Woolies parking photo sparks debateA photo of a NSW shopper’s parking job has left many outraged, but it’s also opened up a debate about the need for a certain car spot. These spots shouldn't exist. You choose to have kids, then you choose to drag them to the shops where they get in everyone else's way. You don't deserve special treatment This doesn't bother me because it doesn't affect me personally. Of course in an ideal world they could park in one spot but by sound of it the driver was in a rush. There is no such thing as a perfect driver. An angry reddit rant is news?
