'Hard choices' loom as property slump clobbers state budget springst

The Andrews government is bracing for more hits to its budget as the housing sales slump bites into the state’s tax revenues.

Public sector unions are reportedly unhappy that a 2 per cent pay rise has been proposed by the state government for tens of thousands of police, health workers and public servants, saying such an offer would fall short of cost-of-living increases. The $9.7 billion earned from the 2016 sale of the Port of Melbourne has already been spent on the state's ambitious level-crossing removal program.

“People do need to realise that the state’s revenue is being compromised, partly due to the adjustment that’s going on in the property market at the moment,” Mr Pallas said.

Slight wobble in hard line but NRL on the straight and narrowBravo Peter Beattie and the movers and shakers of rugby league who changed the rules on Thursday to establish a new kind of sin bin – dare I say under the circumstances of this week, a cardinal sin bin. Peter_Fitz The NRL does not know whether the players are guilty or not. No one knows until the court case has been held. The NRL are concerned about image and money. They have no interest in individual players – this lack of concern for the individual was Stalin’s approach in Russia. Party's over: Balloons are deadliest plastic for seabirdsStudy of dead seabirds found those that swallowed balloon fragments were more than 30 times more likely to die than those that only consumed hard plastic debris. They should not be sold. This is not new news but thank you are raising it again. Hopefully as word spreads this will become an issue in the public mind. Then I think we should ban seabirds from having balloons at their parties. Harsh I know but it’s for their own good.

Beware of groupthink on why the economy's so weakSome experts should consider that maybe it's not the fault of workers that wage rises are hard to find. 1RossGittins Ross, this ignores the twinned problems of a recovery bought with debt at less than a 1:1 ratio; the liquidity injected over many years by central banks (adding debt to their books) and the perceived wealth reduction when they attempted to normalise last year (before reversal). 1RossGittins This is the problem to much thinking and no action walk the walk dont talk the talk 1RossGittins There’s groupthink on a massive scale right there!
