This is a story that, in many respects, is of David and Goliath proportions. On one side is Fox News boss Lachlan Murdoch, one of the world’s most powerful media executives, and on the other is, a small, progressive news website run by long-time local media proprietor and former editor Eric Beecher.on the US congressional hearings investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in 2021.
The other embarrassing aspect to this case is that Lachlan could not have sued a similar website in the US for defamation because the United States protects the free speech he champions. In response to Murdoch’s threat of defamation, has claimed that the Fox News boss would struggle to prove serious harm when similar accusations to what it published are regularly made in the US media.
The media is far from perfect, but Australia’s defamation laws are a serious brake to heated commentary – as the Crikey piece was – as well as substantial investigative journalism in the public interest.
No…crikey isn’t small…all ppl should be accountable..it’s not one law for some and not others…
Free speech and lying/defamation are not the same thing.
BREAKING: DEPOSITIONS of Sean Hannity, Tucker, and others at Fox set for NEXT WEEK by Dominion!
Crikey BEGGED Lachlan to sue them. Publicly. On social media. Seriously, grow up, The Age. Crikey is barely licit!
You are kidding surely? Crikey challenged Murdoch to sue them so he did. Crikey got exactly what they asked for and now some journos are defending them because of 'freedom of speech'. I hope Crikey budgeted for big legal fees this year.
1EarthMedia Astonishing eh? That’s a tough editorial. J/k
Check him out, A tampon in each Cheek!
Says RW gossip rag full of real estate and influencer dross advertorials.
Defamatory speech isn’t free.
Only when the free speech is their lies.
No Murdoch support paid narratives... Murdoch media represents US neocons geopolitical marketing tool...
is it, though? when these people speak of ‘freedom’ they don’t mean *yours*, dear reader
Yeah go on, protect your mates.
This is a very strange test: “[W]ith his endless opportunities to have his say, suing for supposed reputational damage is not appropriate”. On that basis, since The Age runs a daily editorial, I ought to be able to falsely claim The Age’s editors are a bunch of child molesters.
Poor example. You can’t go around accusing people of up to & including Treason & have no permissible evidence to back you up & be relying purely on heresay. They were given a chance to retract & refused. This is a whinging lefty rag who thought they could say & do as they pleased
