Hamas seeks changes to ceasefire plan as Hezbollah launches rocket barrage at Israel

The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fired hundreds of rockets toward northern Israel on Wednesday, hours after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior commander — the highest-ranking member of the group to die in eight months of fighting.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed ally of the Palestinian group Hamas, has recently struck further inside Israel, introducing new and more advanced weaponry. Israeli warplanes have bombed deep inside Lebanon. Hezbollah says it will only stop the attacks if there is a truce in Gaza. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks with the media after meeting with families and supporters of Israelis held hostage by Hama in Gaza, during his visit to Tel Aviv, Israel.The ceasefire proposal has global support but has not been fully embraced by Israel or Hamas. At the same time, negotiations would start over the second phase, which is to bring “a permanent end to hostilities” and “full withdrawal” of Israeli troops from Gaza in exchange for the release of all remaining hostages.
