Halloween mini blue moon a 'treat' for skywatchers tonight

But the definition we use today is a misinterpretation of the traditional definition of a blue moon. The term 'blue moon' was coined by the Maine Farmer's Almanac, which gave names based on seasonal events to 12 full moons each year.

But instead of it being the second full moon in a calendar month , the third out of the four full moons in a season was called a blue moon. The next blue moon that meets both definitions falls on August 31, 2023.At a distance of 406,167 kilometres away, tonight's moon will be the smallest full moon of the year — aka a minimoon or apogee syzygy moon. It's hard to tell the difference between a perigee , normal full moon or apogee moon with the naked eye.

"I like taking photographs of the perigee moon and the apogee moon and contrasting them," Dr Musgrave says.Meanwhile, the Moon will be closest to Earth during the middle of the month during its new moon phase onBut you won't be able to see it, says astronomer Fred Watson. A penumbral eclipse happens when the Earth slips through the outer shadow of the Moon, so it is not as spectacular as a blood red moon. This eclipse is very shallow and it starts before the moon rises, but if you're lucky you might be able to make out a slight colour change if you live in the eastern states.
