A 34-year-old man shoots dead two siblings, aged eight and 11, and their mother with a hunting rifle before killing another seven people and being shot dead by a civilian.

A gunman has killed 10 people, including two children and their mother, before being shot dead by a civilian in the western Montenegro city of Cetinje.The 34-year-old was shot dead by a civilian after opening fire on two siblings and their mother, who were staying with himSix others were injured, a state prosecutor told the country's national broadcaster Vijesti TV after an initial investigation of the crime scene.

Montenegro Police director Zoran Brdjanin said that about 3:30pm Friday a 34-year old man with a hunting rifle shot dead two siblings, one 8 years old and another 11, and injured their mother who died later in a medical facility.He said the motive for the shooting was not yet known, and he did not give the name of the shooter but said his initials were VB.

After shooting the children and their mother, the shooter then walked out of his house and killed another seven people.During a shootout with the police, an officer was injured, Mr Brdjanin said. "When we arrived at the scene, we saw nine dead bodies, including two children, and another two passed away on their way to the hospital," Andrijana Nastic, a state prosecutor, told Vijesti TV.Earlier, media reported that police had killed the shooter.Montenegro's Prime Minister Dritan Abazovic said a three-day mourning period would be declared in the country, starting Friday evening.

President Milo Djukanovic tweeted: "I was deeply disturbed with reports about the terrible tragedy in Cetinje. I express my deepest condolences to those families affected and all those who lost their loved ones."
