Growing up in Kununurra, Archie Stanley has developed a passion for geology — and he's putting his interests to a worthy cause.

A handily-timed Christmas present and growing up in one of the state's most geologically interesting regions has sparked a lucrative trade for one of Western Australia's youngest licensed prospectors. He scooped up a collection from his back yard in Kununurra and was amazed at what he found when he started breaking them open.

The young entrepreneur soon realised he was onto a money spinner and started selling his finds at the local markets to save up for a gaming console. With the video games paid for, Archie's thoughts moved to a favourite teacher, Bernadette Nott, at St Joseph's Primary School, who had a family member battling cancer."I thought I could fundraise for her, so when the family needs a little extra money they could use that money.

"As a geologist, you look at the features of the landforms and appreciate what all those rocks have been through." "The colours are a result of the different chemical impurities carried into voids with silica and groundwater," she said.
