The Andrews government is pushing ahead with the grand prix despite urgent pleas from infectious disease experts and champion race car drivers to cancel the event, as mass gatherings in Victoria are identified as coronavirus exposure spots.
Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton is bewildered the Grand Prix in Melbourne is going ahead as coronavirus grips the world. The global coronavirus outbreak was officially declared a pandemic by the World Health Organisation on Thursday, hours after three Formula 1 team members were placed into isolation amid concerns they may have contracted the virus.
“It’s not just the grand prix that is on this weekend, weddings, funerals, concerts, there are many many gatherings of Victorians coming together.” Labor MP Bill Shorten told Sky News Australia must follow the lead of other countries that had adopted “draconian” measures, but stopped short of calling for the grand prix to be called, conceding it had already started.
More than 4290 people have died from the virus across the globe. The total number of coronavirus cases has reached 128 across Australia. Infectious Diseases and Immunology Professor Nigel McMillan and Victorian Australian Medical Association president Julian Rait also urged Australians to avoid the race.
seems you don’t know anything as usual. Do more journalism
CV19 infection rates are 10-20 times higher than the Govt is telling you Infections are doubling daily These sorts of events should be stopped, if we dont act NOW six months from now we could see 40,000-45,000 fatalities The DUMB WEST is not handling this well
PURE GREED!
Who are the infectious disease experts and why didn’t they plea for the quarantining of all Chinese travellers?
Good luck Melbourne
'Dangerous' Dan Andrews strikes again.
Yet schools are still open, football games have crowds and commuters fill buses, trains and trams. Let the race begin!
Pussies. Where does Vettel think he's driving? A Covid clinic. Which have people who actually are risking their lives. Unlike these princesses who shit themselves, if they get a runny nose. You're paid to drive, Hamilton, not be an expert on Covid transmission. Grow a pair.
this is so stupid
Stoicism is all very well but there’s a pandemic!!
Quarantine Victoria.
Cos we have a shit premier doing his best to make our state shittier.
As a GP fan I would love the race to go ahead. However it seems that once again money talks - irresponsible and a bad look from the Vic government. Could there be a cut for Scomo?
Shamefull.
Well they'll have the community transmission cases soon enough then. Inexplicable decision.
$$$$$ health
Utterly selfish. Healthy young people won’t be affected much but they cld be the infected spreader spreading to the vulnerable group of people. Think of our parents, the old folks! With China, Italy & Iran’s precedents, Australia just couldn’t afford to have this Covid19Outbreak!
Bizarre, this selective crowd control and hibernation has got me stuffed.
Stupid decision
Makes sense...from the same people who gave Victoria, Assisted Dying legislation, comes the first mass implementation
Don’t risk people’s life
if anyone gets infected from the event, then it’s all your fault DanielAndrewsMP
8 people in the travelling group infected, yeah, great decision Dan, how many freebies involved
Sheer insanity
money talks the loudest, always
Poor decision, poor leadership
Ridiculous
A big gamble by DanielAndrewsMP govt. If no virus outbreak all will be good. If widespead outbreak, even if unrelated to F1, then look forward to future Liberal state govt.
Do they force people to fill the seats? Or even drive the cars?
Of course they are, DanielAndrewsMP can't afford not to....Labor have over spent already
Hmmm
At least leave behind the race cars for our museums. Someday I can remind my grandkids, that was the day Fortress Australia fell to the coronavirus...
