People who strangle their partners could be sent to jail for 14 years under the Opposition's plan to strengthen domestic violence laws in Queensland following the murder of Hannah Clarke and her children.

People who strangle their partners would be sent to jail for 14 years under the Opposition's plan to strengthen domestic violence laws in Queensland. The maximum penalty for strangulation would increase from seven to 14 years in jailThe suite of reforms put forward by the LNP Opposition also included a new law to penalise coercive and controlling behaviour, and allow police to issue on-the-spot Domestic Violence Orders .

The proposed overhaul was prompted by the murder of Brisbane mother Hannah Clarke and her three children at the hands of her estranged husband. Opposition Leader Deb Frecklington said they were proposing to double the maximum penalty for strangulation from seven to 14 years in jail."Any measure needs to be put in place that can assist the victims of domestic violence," Ms Frecklington said."If there is something that can be done within the criminal justice system to try to assist these victims, then we must be doing it.

Deb,we need you in Government, someone that will actually do something about domestic and family violence

Here’s a thought men! Stay free, stay rich, stay independent- don’t marry!

Just roll with the jail time.

Who will monitor these tracking devices? The police already have their hands full with call outs for domestic violence. When it does go to court the law lets all down.

Can we also have mandatory jail time for false allegations of DV. Just ask JoshReynolds and Johnny Depp!

zalisteggall I have a feeling they don't think or care about that at the time

it’s a start. But both Red+Blue of QldPol had to be dragged into acting on this, and after a highly public tragic incident, ... All credit should go to the advocates and lobbyists who’ve sought this for over a decade, and not the Political leaders.

Will the victims be given access to the live location of these devices? I think they deserve to know where the person who is a threat to their lives and safety is at all times.
