Up to 100 teenage repeat offenders could be considered for GPS monitoring under the Palaszczuk government's proposed tracker trial, Queensland authorities estimate.

Up to 100 teenage repeat offenders could be considered for GPS monitoring under the Palaszczuk government's proposed tracker trial, according to Queensland authorities.Legislation before Parliament includes giving courts the power to order GPS ankle bracelets for certain recidivist youth offenders

"Taking into consideration the number of recidivist youth offenders aged 16 to 17 years in the trial locations for the period 1 January to 31 December, 2020, it is estimated that up to 100 youths may be considered for electronic monitoring ," the brief said. Higher-level alerts — such as when the device is removed — would then be escalated to the Department of Youth Justice and the QPS "who will decide how to respond".

Other measures include making offending while on bail an aggravating factor in sentencing, and giving police the power to stop and search people for knives using hand-held scanners — "without reasonable suspicion" — inside safe night precincts at Broadbeach and Surfers Paradise during a 12-month trial.
