Exclusive: GPs call for cash boost to deal with COVID-19 ‘fallout’ | lucy_carroll rachelclun

General practitioners are bracing themselves to manage the bulk of coronavirus patients into next year, calling for a major funding overhaul to cope with demand on primary care as more people catch milder cases of the virus and need treatment for long COVID.report, released on Thursday, reveals GPs struggled to manage patient expectations during the pandemic, with three out of five doctors saying changes to vaccine eligibility requirements left people confused and frustrated.

As most people are vaccinated and the disease becomes endemic, GPs will care for COVID-19 cases in-person and through telehealth, rather than in hospitals and ambulances, Dr Price said. For the fifth year running, conditions such as sleep disturbances and depression were the most frequent reason to visit a GP, as 58 per cent of doctors themselves reported burnout and fatigue as one of the major challenges.

In a speech at the launch of the report, Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt will say that, should the Greens hold the balance of power after the next election, the party will push to end the private health rebate, under which $6.7 billion goes to the private health sector each year.
