Government shuts down calls to enshrine Indigenous 'voice' in constitution after outcry from Liberal and Nationals MPs.

Asked if this would disappoint Indigenous leaders, he said all sides had to be careful not to put forward a proposal that would fail at a referendum.

Liberal MP Craig Kelly said on Thursday he saw no need to give greater representation to any race, an argument other members of the party room have made in private since Mr Wyatt's speech on Wednesday."I'm walking with Ken, and I ask people of all political stripes to also join him in good faith, so we can have a genuine dialogue and perhaps discover potential ways forward we can all agree upon," Mr Alexander said.

"There is no veto power, it is an advisory body only, and this nonsense about being a third chamber of Parliament is just – well, it's absolute nonsense."

Coalition MPs raising concerns about recognising Indigenous people in the constitutionA divide is already emerging among Coalition MPs about whether to recognise Indigenous people in the constitution. Vote them out Yes, we don't want to shed a light on genecide here in Sydney where the apparent truth is: all the first people moved to the desert or Redfern? Valid concerns given the principle aim with most, if not all, attempts at amending the constitution are simply to satisfy a very small but vocal portion of the population. Given that there are more folk purporting to be Jewish in Australia than there are indigenous, what next!

Government to hold referendum on Indigenous constitutional recognition within three yearsIndigenous Australians Minister Ken Wyatt is preparing to hold a referendum on Indigenous constitutional recognition in this parliamentary term. it should be done within two years well before the next election. the last thing anybody needs is this Govt using it as an election platform We have to recognise that they own the land and we are mere guests on it. Should we paying tribes a fee from all profits earned from the land? Yes. Britain paid China for the rent of HK and then returned the land after the lease. It’s not dissimilar in Australia’s case Why not this year .. why wait ? What’s the bloody hold up

Indigenous referendum could be PM's callScott Morrison will have the captain's call on working towards a referendum on changing the constitution to recognise indigenous Australians, a senator says. It's like this-if it is just recognising them in the constitution as the first people, then I think most Aussies would be fine with that. But if recognising them in the constitution gives them more powers than they do have now, we need to have a transparent detailed conversation.
