The Morrison government has responded to findings of the royal commission into national natural disaster arrangements, as it comes under increasing pressure to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

Laws will be introduced to enable the declaration of a national emergency, the government has announced, as it comes under increasing pressure to commit to net zero emissions by 2050.

In its findings, the royal commission repeatedly identified climate change as a factor that will increase the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, with this elevated risk already locked in by the effects of global warming. Dr Jaci Brown, Director of the CSIRO's Climate Science Centre said current trends indicate Australia will likely see 3.2 degrees of warming by the end of the century. This would bring more frequent extreme weather events such as bushfires and droughts. As states and territories have signalled their support for a net-zero emissions target by 2050, the federal government has maintained its resistance to the long-term target.

Australia has pledged to lower emissions by 26 to 28 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 as part of the Paris Agreement with the federal government focused on a technology driven approach to reducing emissions. Mr Finkel said he would like to see Australia proceed towards a net zero target"as fast as we can do so with economic efficiency". The government’s response to the royal commission includes new laws to declare a national emergency and a federal agency to lead on resilience, relief and recovery.

The way things are going- 2050 will be too late

Better late than never 👻

We could take the entire continent back to 1787 and it wouldn't make a single cow fart worth of difference to the global climate. It's third world population growth, you fu**ing ret**ds. Write something real.

Usual ScottyFromMarketing empty waffle; no increase in aerial firefighting capacity, just create another 'agency' in Canberra to oversee ADF deployment as 'surge capacity' which already happens! Remember 'announcement' about Reservists last Summer? No communication with States!

ScoMo is master of hiding and committing to anything!

What a pity ScottMorrisonMP didn’t respond to the 20+ Fire Chiefs who wanted to meet and express their concern about potential fires in the coming summer, or denying their requests for more water bombers - just a marketing ploy by ScottyFromMarketing
