A $2.1 billion health package will be provided by the federal government amid concerns of rising COVID-19 cases and an expected spike in influenza over winter.

The government is yet to explain how the money will be spent, but national cabinet will meet this afternoon to discuss the winter COVID-19 and influenza plan.

Over the past two years, infection rates have been low due to border closures, lockdowns and social distancing rules. , and experts warned that the subvariant of Omicron, which is believed to be more transmissible, was becoming the dominant strain.
