ACTU President Michele O’Neil says the government cannot “rewrite history” and commit to the promise it made to support Australian workers through the COVID-19 crisis.

The government on Friday revealed a costing error by Treasury meant the wage subsidy was initially forecast $60 billion higher than was required. It is now estimated the JobKeeper program will cost the government $70 billion and will cover about 3.5 million workers. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said the error was made as his department made the initial forecast on overly pessimistic health advice.

Speaking with Sky News, Ms O’Neil insisted the government’s defence did not stack up. “It seems like every day now there is a reason as to why this bungle happened,” she said. The ACTU President urged the government to use the additional money to assist the some 600,000 Australians who lost their job in April. “You can't then just rewrite history. There is a huge problem with unemployment. 600,000 Australian workers lost their job just in the month of April.

JobKeeper windfall 'very good news': Taylor | Sky News AustraliaA revision to the cost of the government’s JobKeeper program is “very good news” for the economy, according to Energy Minister Angus Taylor. \n\nThe government on Friday revealed a costing error by Treasury meant the wage subsidy scheme was initially forecast $60 billion higher than was required. \n\nIt is now estimated the JobKeeper program will cost the government $70 billion and will cover about 3.5 million workers. \n\nSpeaking with Sky News, Mr Taylor downplayed claims of a mistake within Treasury insisting the $130 billion figure was only ever a “forecast”. \n\n“This was a forecast, an update of the forecast, the original forecast was based on the best information available and this was a more subsequent update,” he said. \n\n“This was not an objective or a target. Only the Labor Party could think spending more money is a target.”\n\nMr Taylor said the revision indicated the economy was in better shape than was anticipated. \n\n“It is actually very good news. It means on the ground, and that’s where it counts, it means businesses are in better shape than we may have anticipated when those original forecasts were put in place on the best information available,” Mr Taylor said. \n\n“It does mean we are in a better position as we work our way towards recovery.”\n\nA review into the scheme will be carried out by the government in June. Govt shoots down JobKeeper expansion | Sky News AustraliaThe government will not move to broaden the definition of JobKeeper despite the $60 billion saving, Sky News Chief Anchor Kieran Gilbert says. \n\nThe government on Friday revealed a costing error by Treasury meant the wage subsidy scheme was initially forecast $60 billion higher than was required. \n\nIt is now estimated the JobKeeper program will cost the government $70 billion and will cover about 3.5 million workers. \n\nMr Gilbert said senior government sources indicated the scheme would not be widened and they viewed the revised forecast as a good thing. \n\n“They see this as a positive, that the debt burden will be less.”\n\n Kieran_Gilbert The criticism is ridiculous here. When they announced Jobkeeper, it was a forecast. At that point we had no idea how badly Australia would be hit. Many didn’t require it and others hadn’t done their tax or work in the cash economy. Kieran_Gilbert Well done. The leftists don't understand the difference between genuine resources and debt and how to use them. A country could take debt for infrastructure that will pay itself back, that's an investment. Taking debt for Welfare 'dilutes' the country's wealth and creates poverty Kieran_Gilbert Good

JobKeeper error ‘opens the door’ for Labor to argue for greater spending | Sky News AustraliaThe Australian Financial Review’s Aaron Patrick says the government’s $60 billion JobKeeper accounting error is only a short-term political problem, but is a “medium and long-term political advantage”.\n\nThe government on Friday revealed a costing error by Treasury meant the wage subsidy scheme was initially forecast $60 billion higher than was required.\n\nIt is now estimated the JobKeeper program will cost the government $70 billion and will cover about 3.5 million workers.\n\nMr Patrick described the mistake as a “colossal own goal” for the government but has worked out entirely in its favour, and suggested it “keep the money in their pocket”.\n\nHe said the $60 billion discrepancy “opens up the door” and makes it easier for the Labor Party to “argue that the stimulus package isn’t as big as it needs to be”.\n\nDaily Telegraph columnist Miranda Devine told Sky News host Sharri Markson the accounting error is “symptomatic” of what has existed since the beginning of the pandemic, which is how the “modelling of experts has turned out to be way overblown”.\n\nImage: Getty The GFC lies worked for 12 years, imagine what $6000000000.00 will do. Chalmers has all the red flags of a terrible Paul Keating just with even more taxes than before and no idea on how to force big miners to keep jobs here whilst slugging them huge taxes... muppet!!!
