Rising costs of fuel and groceries along with surging interest rates continue to plague the new government, but the Prime Minister attempted to deflect responsibility on Wednesday to external forces.
Shadow treasurer Angus Taylor said the government had “gone to ground” on the issue after previously positioning cost of living support as a key tenet of its pitch to voters. Mr Albanese echoed the former government on Wednesday when he pointed to global pressures – like the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine – putting additional strain on Australian households.
But despite the Prime Minister’s declaration that the effects of the war were beyond his control, it came in stark contrast to his Treasurer’s comments during the campaign. The Reserve Bank’s official cash rate is expected to continue to rise from the current 1.85 per cent, adding additional strain to households with floods across two states severely impacting food costs.
