Gone in 60 seconds: Pedestrians made to wait a minute more likely to illegally cross road, get hit | smh_andrew

Pedestrians who are forced to wait longer than a minute at intersections are more likely to cross against the lights and be involved in a road accident, it was revealed as a Sydney council says fining jaywalkers does not improve road safety.

Professor Regan said the findings were similar to earlier research that found pedestrians crossing against the lights were about eight times more likely at risk of a road accident. A City of Sydney spokeswoman said the state government was responsible for traffic signal management, including wait times for people walking. She said the council had consistently advocated for shorter wait times, “as this encourages walking, boosts economic productivity and health, and can contribute to improved road safety”.

Balancing the needs of different road users, including motorists, cyclists, public transport and pedestrians, was challenging, he said.

_andrew we need to think of intersections as places where vehicles can cross walkways rather than where walkers can cross roads

_andrew Would have been better to approach walksydney1 for comment rather than Harold Scruby.
