His comments denigrated a series of high-profile women in Australia’s tech sceneA start-up founder has resigned after posting a raft of offensive remarks regarding women in Australia’s tech industry. Sam Joel, founder and chief executive of GiveTree, stepped down from his crypto-based charity on Tuesday afternoon.
In another post, Mr Joel says diversity “might be the dumbest shit of the entire century” and women “have somehow secured majority employment in most verticals now. And still. Complaining. Classic women.”Mr Joel’s comments were deleted late on Sunday evening, and GiveTree issued an apology on his behalf on Monday.
Mr Joel’s outburst over the weekend prompted observers to report his comments to the social media platform.spoke with several women who said Mr Joel’s social media abuse was relatively frequent. Around the same time, Mr Joel was not selected to take part in Techstars’ start-up accelerator program, which would have made a small investment in GiveTree. Screenshots viewed by the“So far, it’s not looking good for techstars. I mean you are both obviously very good looking females – but you have no finsiehd product.”
“Sam was originally welcomed because we were inspired by his story,” said Alan Jones, who was chief executive of Fishburners at the time. But because of bullying and harassment claims “we had to ask him to leave”, Mr Jones said.
