A 16-year-old girl tells an inquiry she can no longer trust police after she was subjected to a strip search at the Splendour in the Grass music festival when a sniffer dog falsely detected drugs on her.

A teenage girl who was forced to strip and squat in front of police after a false detection by a sniffer dog told an inquiry she"could not stop crying".The Counsel Assisting the Commission said the police strip-search could've constituted an assault on the girl

After a sniffer dog came and sat next to her, she said an officer said:"Put your hands where I can see them and don't reach for anything.""I was really scared because I didn't have any drugs on me and I was completely alone," she said in a statement.

Child abuse

Horrendous and despicable behaviour by the police. They get off on humiliating the powerless.

But its ok to lower the voting age to 16. Teens be warned

The public has a right to enjoy its parks and gardens without the encroachment of massive commercial events. This child's selfish parents should have considered that. No sympathy here.

This girl should take legal action against the police because what they did is straight out harassment and perverted . Picking a girl in line on her own , easy target .

I’ve never supported festival pill testing or leniency for drug use of any kind but strip searching a 16yr old girl is a disgusting abuse of power & constitutes an assault by any common sense measure. As a parent I am absolutely horrified. This is gov’t gone too far! Way too far!

This was not “errant”. It was abhorrent. And should be illegal.

phbarratt Police state.

Not the police fault.. what was a 16 year old doing going to festival by herself? If she’s old enough to attend festival she’s old enough to be searched

So .... charges against the police for assault are pending?

Does this not enter the field of child abuse,if so can and will the officers involved be charged accordingly, or will there be another cover up and evasion of justice.

I just wonder how GladysB would feel if it happened to her.

Not 'errant': there are many other adjectives that better describe this search, such as 'abhorrent' or 'illegal'.

This needs to be highlighted in each sniffer dog story.

That is disgusting!

The Counsel Assisting the Commission said the police strip-search could've constituted an assault on the girl. The girl, who was 16 years old at the time and is known as BRC, said she had been waiting in line on day one of the Splendour in the Grass festival at Byron Bay in 2018

The old squat trick

That’s absolutely disgusting, as a parent of 4 girls that scares me that can happen, hope she sues them

WHF where the police thinking ? imagine if it was their 16 yr old daughter, maybe if a sniffer dog picks something up, then don't allow her access to the event.

Make the festivals +18, not unreasonable given the sort of things that do actually go on there.

That needs to be fully investigated and police charged with this

😢😒 Checking if these were Turkish, Philippine, Saudi, Russian, Indonesian, Chinese....Police Oh, right Australian...ok ~ NOT

molesters

I think you should speak to your writers ‘errant’ really! This is nothing short of sexual and emotional abuse by police officers. Abuse of a 16 year old girl attending a music festival. Speak to your writers abc 😡

I think about my niece at this age and I want to scream. that poor girl. I hope someone is cradling her in their arms. Bloody Hell!!

MelissaLDavey These abusive police powers need to be urgently wound back. auspol

It's a shame what happened but on the other hand. At 16 she shouldn't be at a music festive alone, where drug related incidents occur quiet often.

MelissaLDavey That would have traumatised me at 16. It would traumatise me now. That is just not on. Abhorrent

Are we talking a Guinness world record here?

More to come!!!!beware, whats happening to our rights This is shameful!!!!

At that point it's sexual assault. You cannot force a young person to strip and squat in front of a stranger because a dog THINKS it's detected something.... And their failure rate is quite high.

The basic and underlying problem with this is that detection dogs of any kind are not 100% reliable and should be treated as such.

Touch me and I will smack you . Her rights were violated

Absolutely abhorrent!

how is this not a sexual assault? how does it differ from a sexual assault in terms of harm to the victim, betrayal of trust, trauma etc?
