The local arm of the pharma giant behind a major coronavirus treatment candidate says it is focused on Australia's pandemic preparedness.

Global pharmaceuticals giant Gilead has flagged the supply of its coronavirus treatment Remdesivir will be constrained until September, though the local arm of the business has said it is focused on extending the drug to more patients as well as ensuring Australia is prepared for future pandemics.. It is the first coronavirus treatment option to be approved for use in hospitalised patients.

"The supply to both the Australian government and the expanded access program have been part of Gilead’s commitment in April to donate our entire existing supply [1.5 million vials] of Remdesivir at no cost for clinical trials, compassionate use and expanded access programs around the world, including Australia," she said.

The TGA's provisional approval of Remdesivir came during the first week of Victoria's return to lockdown, and predictions that hundreds of Victorians may require hospitalisation in the next fortnight. The company said this was due to "complex dynamics" in the hepatitis treatments market, a key product segment for the global biotech. It said it expected solid performance of the company's key products into the coming year, though "price reductions may impact top line revenue and profitability".

Getting a COVID-19 test? Don't get caught out by misinformation on social mediaWhile testing is ramping up to detect COVID-19, misleading information is circulating social media about how — and whether — the tests detect the virus. Or from the White House Why can't we have the simple saliva test instead of the brain drill? the PCR tests used to identify so-called COVID-19 patients presumably infected by what is called SARS-CoV-2 do not have a valid gold standard to compare them with.
