Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke will use a speech in Sydney on Friday to accuse the sector of driving down the wages of up to 1 million workers. | By Nick Bonyhady nickbonyhady auspol gigeconomy

Credit:“Gig work drives down wages and it has been spreading like a cancer through the economy,” Burke will tell union members ahead of next week’s jobs and skills summit in Canberra.

Unlike traditional employees, contractors for gig companies do not have rights to minimum wages, unfair dismissal protections, employer superannuation payments, workers’ compensation for injuries or paid leave.

for the return of industry-wide pay bargaining. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has said the ACTU proposal risks a “tightening of the industrial relations scheme that takes it back to the 1970s”.Burke will deliver the speech at an event in Sydney’s west for the Transport Workers Union , which has been the sector’s primary antagonist through its years-long reform campaign.

Reform talks between Burke’s department and the companies will begin on Friday, marking the first of several rounds of broad-ranging meetings to get input on how to let the Fair Work Commission set minimum standards for employee-like workers.

nickbonyhady Tony…”I fly first class to Barcelona with my staffer who I’ll marry later” Bourke…yep he’s got you covered…trust him…like his wife Cathy did….

nickbonyhady A failure of the Labor movement, Tony. It is big tech, digital disruption, driving the proliferation of casual jobs. If the unions were at all effective workers would join & have strength in numbers.

nickbonyhady The very reason I refuse to use any Uber or similar services. Smacks of human exploitation & flouting a system that supposedly protects workers basic rights.

nickbonyhady there shouldn't be a 'gig' economy... it was invented by corporates to ensure they could obfuscate employee entitlements/wages and work status, like full time or part time work... it should be abolished... i bet that's not being discussed at the jobs summit 🙄

nickbonyhady Maybe there should have been safeguards in place for such workers at the onset of such businesses. Why was this allowed in the first place?
