Germans go to polls but Merkel's anointed successor may have cast incorrect vote

Germans have gone to the polls in a national election too close to call, with the centre-left Social Democrats mounting a strong challenge to retiring Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives.Germans are going to the polls in a tightly fought election which will see the end of Angela Merkel's 16-year reign

A fractured electorate means that after the election, leading parties will sound each other out before embarking on more formal coalition negotiations that could take months, leaving Ms Merkel, 67, in charge in a caretaker role."We all sense that this is a very important federal election," Mr Laschet told journalists after voting in his home constituency of Aachen.

However, many were unsure if the votes Mr Laschet cast himself will count as his ballot papers were visible as he put them in the ballot box, something that is not allowed under German law. It was not immediately clear whether election officials in Mr Laschet’s constituency in Aachen had noticed that his paper was folded wrongly, a moment that was caught by cameras, or whether the faux pas would have any consequences.

At least Germany has ELECTIONS, NOT rigged selections by the swamp like the France, US, UK, Australia, Canada !
