Special analysis of new figures from the Australian Taxation Office show median incomes in the city's 10 best-off suburbs grew almost 13 per cent, while they actually fell in the worst off, such as Broadmeadows, Burwood and Clayton

The gap between Melbourne's have and have not suburbs has widened since the federal election of 2013-14, with residents in some parts of the city suffering a fall in their incomes over the past four years.

In 2013-14, the median income for the top 10 Melbourne suburbs – including Toorak, Brighton and Armadale – was $57,260. By 2017-18 it had grown to $64,255.Yet among the 10 suburbs with the lowest median incomes a different story played out. These 10, including the city centre, St Albans and Box Hill, saw an increase of just 2.2 per cent.

Middle suburbs have also failed to keep up with the income growth being enjoyed in richer parts of the city. In these areas that include Brunswick West, Upwey and Rowville, median incomes lifted by 10.2 per cent. "Residents of middle-ring suburbs have had to commute longer distances to access these high-income jobs or make do with the lower paying local jobs.

When it comes to average incomes, which can be skewed by a small number of very well compensated individuals, the widening between top and bottom has been even larger.

Disraeli said 'There are lies, damned lies and statistics.' Article should be read with a pinch of salt. Melbourne at 1, Clayton 2, Burwood 5, and Carlton 8 reflects significant student populations. Not saying that the gap has not widened, rather a deeper dive is needed.

New Closing the Gap targets will 'not address' root causes of Indigenous disadvanatge | Sky News AustraliaThe new Closing the Gap targets will do little to address Indigenous disadvantage because the agreement was negotiated with bureaucracies who think the problem is entrenched systematic racism, not the fact that not enough Aboriginal kids go to school, adults go to work, or families stay safe, according to Sky News host Peta Credlin.\n\nPrime Minister Scott Morrison has committed to 16 new targets designed to improve indigenous disadvantage, in order to reset the failed Closing the Gap initiative.\n\nThe targets will address critical areas such as early childhood, justice reform, education, life expectancy and housing.\n\nThe agreement will give Indigenous Australians better involvement in decision making and measuring the progress and success of the targets.\n\nMs Credlin said despite the fanfare, this new agreement would only benefit 'rent seekers' looking to profit off the taxpayer. \n\n“This document is all about process, not outcomes, and it's my worry here is that it's the sort of response we've seen in the past from organisations entirely dependent on government funding, and always seeking more,” Ms Credlin said.\n \n“What can be guaranteed from this is that there will be more spending, more meetings and more statements, but there will be little, if any, meaningful change in the lives of the people who most need help.\n \n“I'd really like to hail this as a breakthrough and a game changer and a new beginning. But it's not. \n\n'It's just more of what's got us to this sorry position where, as a country, we've never spent more trying to improve the lives of aboriginal people yet the outcomes don't match the reality and all we've really done is just spawn an industry that profits from taxpayer spending, rather than give more aboriginal people control over their own lives and futures.”\n So do nothing?
