Sam Stosur still has her sights set on playing in more grand slams after February’s Australian Open, despite ongoing pandemic uncertainty, the birth of her first child and her decades-long run on the gruelling world tennis tour.
The world No. 112 and 2011 US Open champion spent 2020 taking a break from tennis because of the pandemic and then because of her partner, Liz, giving birth to their first child, Genevieve.Stosur, after two-and-a-half months where she didn’t hit a ball at all, returned to training gradually beginning in September, and hopes to play at another WTA event in Adelaide following the Australian Open.Beyond that, it’s hard to say when she will next be on a tennis court playing for rankings points.
“It makes it tough to make a schedule given the family circumstances now. Ten years ago I’d jump on a plane and not come back for a year but I am not in a position to do that at the moment. “It will look like a lot of the Aussies will pack their bags and go for many months and not come back for short breaks.““I would absolutely love to play the other slams this year, especially the French Open. I would love to get back there,” she said of the tournament where she finished runner-up in 2010.
