NRL: NRL chairman Peter V'landys spoke to the media following Brisbane locking in Magic Round until 2027.

Don’t miss Hello Sport & Bloke in a Bar takeover the Sea Eagles vs Broncos feed on Friday night from 8pm only on Kayo Sports. But his path to the top has been far from traditional and he easily could have ended up in the A-League or the AFL, such was his talent and athleticism as a teenager.

But it was one fateful rugby league tournament playing for his school, St Michael’s College, where he was spotted by then-Broncos reserve grade coach Ivan Henjak. After joining the Broncos system, it took only two-and-a-half years between him picking up rugby league and playing in first grade.Source: News Limited

“I’d experienced success and I knew the hard work it took to get that success. I didn’t really see it as a big thing, if anything I was a bit impatient. I thought I should have debuted in 2006, not 2007. “But what he didn’t know was Wayne had told me to sit really deep to bait out a chip kick from Manly, and that’s how I scored my debut try.

Then the Broncos came calling, and despite a lack of rugby league knowledge, Steve ‘the Pearl’ Renouf was a big inspiration of his. During that campaign he scored one of rugby league’s most memorable tries, scoring after the final siren winner to down the Eels 30-26 in only his 13th first grade appearance.

“I could have played way more NRL, but if I had have played more NRL would I have been as fortunate as I am today. I wouldn’t trade anything for the world to not have what I have today. “When I was still playing, I wasn’t as committed at the start of my career because things hadn’t gone my way and I was a bit jaded,” he said.

“At worst even if it went okay then I would be able to advertise an electrical business on it. At best, it takes off and I get to live the dream.” “I’d never met him before, I’d played against him, but I was fully wigging out. Cameron Smith was at my house and I’m interviewing him and it was crazy. “I consider him a mate which is like, you know, from a perspective of what he’s achieved in life it’s a privilege. Obviously he’s just a normal bloke like the rest of us.

“It wasn’t necessarily trying to be the next big, unique craft beer. It was more just like I love the experience of beer, sitting around having a couple with mates, watching the football.
