Opinion: We know we've become dependent on China. But how much do we know about China other than its economic status as a customer? | Peter Hartcher

We know we've become dependent on China. And that China is using our dependency against us to "punish" Australia for having its own view of the world. In the last fortnight, Beijing added two more of Australia's commodity exports – cotton and coal – to its list of sanctioned items.

The territory we recognise today as China bore the name of each successive dynasty that ruled it. Just as its name changed with the name of the dynasty, so did the shape of its borders and lands. This is an uncomfortable reality for the Chinese Communist Party today as it continues to make new claims in the name of historical "rights" to territories also claimed by its neighbours.

Funny, yes? But serious, too. Hayton explains that the tale "demonstrates the anxiety and paranoia that lurk just beneath the surface of contemporary China's politics. If Xi had given Merkel a map of 18th-century Prussia that excluded most of western Germany, the object would have been treated as an interesting curio.

The Qing, Manchu invaders from the north, had ruled for nearly three centuries over what today is called China. The Confucian consensus of the time was that political legitimacy arose from participation in the civilised culture, and that this meant anyone from anywhere, even barbarians, even the Manchu, could participate in the nation.

Peter hartcher just wrote lunatic driven oiece on how trump is the devil himself and now fairfax spewing pro china communist party pieces....wonder how much china $$$ they getting

Wait up Australia ! When we want to have appeasement policies towards China, just remember the dangers of “tolerance of intolerance”( Karl Popper).

When we, Australia, ever want to have appeasement policies with China, just the dangers of tolerance of intolerance.

Do we ask for a 'background check' when a customer walks into a shop ? Same rules apply...

Dynasty after dynasty has survived in China ..they are in it for the long haul, not a 3year plan of pillage and false promises ...we know that much about China

In fact, the thriving economic is just a bubble that will be blasted in no time. The best sustainable way is to strengthen the local economy by subsiding local businesses and encouraging ppl to support them, thus reducing reliance on China. Australia

Almost impossible to get any sensible information from Western media about China - it's completely biased

World should isolate China. Self reliance for all countries and Economic Distancing from CCP is the way to go The world is nurturing this giant evil CCP regime by apologising and continuing trading with them. Let them think that money can buy democracy , freedom and human rights.

First time western media talk about this truth. The present PRC China never the ancient China. Even Hongkongers race and language is not the same as the northern Chinese. Hongkongers race is more close to yue. Yue is the same race as Viet in Ancient. Yue = Cantonese

Nonsense article wasting my time. Mr Peter Hartcher, can you focus on writing something that’s really essential and helpful to the Australia-China relation and to the Australian people?

Fairfax Media.. how the years have changed. Once a reputable Investigative journalism ... now 'Tabloid Journalism + Advertisement' just missing the topless page 3 girl.

For sure...Imagine if they were a force for good in the world?

Informing the public is not dead, thank you TSMH.

The only way away from our dependency we have to accept the responsibility of attempting to buy australian whenever possible and chinese as a last resort.

Some of the Chinese people knew the assets of China were not belonged to the authorities, but owned by the families of the top 20 leaders. But they cannot say a word. FreedomOfSpeech

Opinion from USA Leader and current Administration? Thanks to USA promoting Globalisation Free Trade and Markets.... That only allows USA the Winner and others, agree with them or risk Ban and sanctions. What benefits Australian citizens in supporting US Fear mongering and War?

Pete I'm inclined to agree that 'we' know less about China than 'we' think. Can you please tell us what this doc says & what year it is from?

AUSSIA POST A NATIONAL THREAT TO CHINA. CHINA SHOULD TOTALLY REDUCE 90% ITS DEPENDENT ON AUSSIE IRON ORE AND BOOST DOMESTIC MINING WITH IN 2-3 YEARS

TRASH as usual from SMH. How shameless are you! Peter Hartcher! Europeans made up the name of China. We call ourselves ZHONGGUO, a name from c.1000 BCE in the time of the Zhou. dynasty

CCPChina cares about people, including your families, friends, colleagues, and may be whoever on your cell phone contact list and photo album.

And CCP is using 'China' as the tool to control ethnic Chinese, in China and overseas

Peter Hartcher does not understand the need to RESPECT China. The sensitivities surrounding the territory and sovereignty issues stems from the suffering and humiliation forced upon the Chinese people during the colonial era and later.

A timely reminder that SenatorAbetz was actually channeling Peter Hartcher in his 'Senate Committee on un-American activities' last week. At least SMH filed this rubbish under 'opinion' auspol2020 sinophobes

Claiming China is progressive is a fking joke lol. You are only obsequious now for some money only to have their whole system inside you.

My God! Are you a real POLITICAL editor, Peter? You even don’t know the difference between a country and a govt. Eg, the history of Australia covers both Aboriginals and Commonwealth instead of Commonwealth alone. China has got civilized history of about 5000 years, mate!

We also know the Chinese Communist Party enslaves over a million Uighurs in detention camps.

I heard that only less than 150 Australians with no Chinese heritage can speak fluent Chinese. How can such a country understand China well?

So their arrogance face to world is perhaps more for domestic consumption.

China is pragmatic, modern and forward moving.

Rulers of Yuan Dynasty brought in mongolia (including the counrty), rulers of Qing brought in Manchuria. Technically could include vietnam and korea, depending your sense of history. Few westerners understand this. Not merely a ccp propaganda.

The reason why China has become so aggressive is because the US is more aggressive

All I know is not every Australian is dependent on china and we’d like to keep it that way. Leave the brown nosing to you poor fellas.

The relative trickle of nonsensical pap about China is turning into a flood as the CCP works away in the background

China has succeeded because it was able to impose harsh restrictive measures that would be impossible to carry out in Western democracies. The reasons why China beat America in coronavirus crisis.

Daniel Andrews fires back over “desperate distraction” criticismDaniel Andrews has sensationally hit out at Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, accusing him of “playing politics” and calling him a “Liberal, not a leader”. Don't be Gullible. Andrews is a CCP mole, so clear now. He's deliberately locked down retail to sabotage the Aus economy, part of China's plans. Notice fairly generous social interaction now, but nothing for retail and hospitality. That is deliberately targeted sabotage And it's absolutely true. Fraudenberg is no leader with fair reason.

Sick Britons avoid hospitals, driving up deaths at home during the pandemicPeople in the UK are dying at home from cancer, heart disease, dementia and other illnesses in unusually high numbers as the sick avoid hospitals and nursing homes despite assurances the health system has capacity to care for them | BevanShields BevanShields So basically, poor covid response from conservatives has has a ripple effect on people with other medical issues and people are dying due to incompetant leadership that takes no accountability. Noted. BevanShields 'However, COVID-19 accounted for just 2490 of those 27,000 'excess' deaths.'
