Local police encountered three separate groups of rioters in the capital city of Noumea on Wednesday numbering between 3,000 to 5,000 people, according to High Commissioner of the Republic of New Caledonia Louis Le Franc. It is not the first time France have sent police from the mainland to New Caledonia . In 2021, mobile units were sent to Noumea amid fears of violence over a contentious referendum.
The High Commission reported at least 60 other gendarmes and police officers were injured during Wednesday night’s protests and almost 200 rioters were arrested, surpassing the previous night’s total. “We will spare no means, no effort to allow the return of order and security to New Caledonia,” Attal said on X, according to an English translation. “The state of emergency came into force a few hours ago. It must allow a return to calm. Tomorrow morning I will chair a new crisis unit.”
Anyone in Noumea is being urged to reconsidering travelling due to the civil unrest, travel disruptions and limited essential services. The legislative changes would mean French citizens who have been residents of the territory for 10 years could cast ballots in provincial elections, according to France24.
