ANALYSIS: Four allies met to discuss an increasingly aggressive Beijing. Only one dared speak China's name

Four of the most powerful democracies in the Indo-Pacific region just met to discuss an increasingly assertive Beijing. Only one dared to call the Chinese Government out by name.

Inside the lavish Iikura Guest House in the heart of Tokyo, it didn't take long for US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to make his case for more cooperation against China. "We believe in a region governed by rules, not power. We believe in the fundamental importance of individual rights and in a region in which disputes are resolved according to international law."There was no question to which country she was referring. She just didn't mention it by name.

It was all part of a deliberate strategy according to Euan Graham, a former British diplomat and now Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. "The Quadrilateral in some senses is taking up the slack that's left from ASEAN meetings where there is a failure to really be able to agree or speak openly about some of the more controversial issues that China does not want to see publicly discussed," Dr Graham said.

Even for US, Apple is enjoying 2 largest market in China. GE, 3M, Fort, Tesla are all having huge profits there. If aliases cannot see what is going on that will be sad. Only Japan seen it clearly.

Quote Marise Payne: 'We believe in a region governed by rules, not power. We believe in the fundamental importance of individual rights, in a region in which disputes are resolved according to international law.' 😂 ABC, you yet again embarrass yourself.

Do we want to be allies with a country that doesn't follow the Geneva Convention, doesn't fund the WHO and actively encourages extrajudicial killing of black people?

Its like ganging up on a kid at school, sooner or later they will react with force. Best to ignore china and get our own manufacturing in order and other trading partners so as we aren't reliant on China. Play them at their own game

... without masks.

Beware the Rapture Ratbag!

Suggest it’s the USA and Australia who are becoming increasingly aggressive towards Beijing

We should not be meeting with Pompeo he will drag us into another USA war. We should have learnt a lesson from Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iran etc.

Well,if you can’t let people love you then you can try to let them fear you ,it suggests the tactic is working, the punishment of China’s authority over other American allies during the conflict between US and China is really frightening them, light boxers

we don't need the 'speak' to complicate the problem. We need the 'action' to solve the problem and only the US can help solve this. 'Speak' with no concrete 'action' does not encourage others to 'speak' more firmly. 3 of the quad are in close proximity to China compared to the US

. The others spoke of an increasingly aggressive USA. .

It fails to protect freedom of speech/press. It fails to protect our political right to vote. The rule of law is perpetuating injustice in HK.
