‘Forward thinking’: Socceroos legend Cahill backs FIFA’s biennial World Cup plans | VinceRugari

Cahill was among 18 ex-players who gathered for a two-day summit in Doha with FIFA’s chief of global development Arsene Wenger toTim Cahill is a fan of FIFA’s proposal to play the World Cup every two years.Fans around the world have widely rejected the idea of doubling the frequency of the World Cup, which has been played every four years since 1930, as needless largesse on FIFA’s part that would ruin long-standing tradition and cheapen the value of the sport’s crown jewel.

The 41-year-old, along with Brazilian icon Ronaldo and Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, was made available to global media late on Thursday as Wenger went public for the first time with FIFA’s biennial World Cup plans. “I’m Australian, I played in four World Cups ... three of those [we qualified through] Asia. It’s really , really difficult,” he said.

Cahill now works in Qatar, where he is the chief sports officer at the Aspire Sports Academy. His close ties to the oil-rich state have rankled some Australian fans, who criticised him last year for becoming an official ambassador for the Qatar 2022 World Cup due to the human rights abuses connected to stadium construction.

Ronaldo dismissed arguments that playing the World Cup more often would make it less prestigious, saying that was not the case for annual events like the UEFA Champions League and tennis’ four grand slam tournaments.

VinceRugari Lol it's not forward thinking though, it's watering down the prestige of the tournament. There's a reason why it's the most viewed event in the world when it's on.

VinceRugari Oh good. My...laundry...is done

VinceRugari Tim is a sporting legend in a country that puts its sports heroes on the highest of pedestals. It should be impossible for the general public let alone football fans to hate this man… but geez is he trying his best to turn everyone against him 😭

VinceRugari I trust Cahill's opinion. He can't be bought! Just ask Sanitarium, New Balance, ACY Securities, Qatar FA, EA Sports, Elite Sports Academy (Dubai), Shoreditch Suits, Vitaman, CCi Global, Cruzza, DYNAMIcTapE

VinceRugari Every 2x minimises & devalues the WC.Biennial WC? Might as well Scrap WC & have a 9 tier NT global league Every year

VinceRugari What a sellout. So disappointing in his post football career thus far

VinceRugari Outside of the World Cup. Internationals are a nuisance. Wake up FIFA. Having a WC every 2 years is only supported by those who would line their pockets from it. No Football fans are asking for this.

VinceRugari 🤦🏻‍♂️ they’ve bought Timmy

VinceRugari Timmy loves the buck...their is a buck in this or two.

VinceRugari Timmy is on the payroll of the people trying to get us to forget about the corruption and human rights abuses that have allowed the Qatar to host the WC. So of course he is on board with this.

VinceRugari

VinceRugari Every two years will reduce the significance of the WC. It’s one of the more pure elements left. Adding more teams - no problem - but every 2 years will slowly kill the golden goose. How will former WC wins be regarded? Different coloured stars? Will Euros still be 4 years?

VinceRugari the first time i'm clicking on an article and hoping it's behind paywall, damn

NSW now has a plan to reopen after lockdown, but will Australia's economy bounce back this time?Australia's economy rebounded very strongly from last year's national lockdown and other localised ones, but there are reasons to fear the recovery from the latest NSW, Victorian and ACT lockdowns could be much weaker. It will be a slow/painful recovery for small business. Government has not thought through the impact of policing the vaccination compliance. If it falls to business it will see significant incremental expense, and leave them open to reputational damage / abuse by customers The economy is an abstract term. The question should be about people's well being: will they have enough to eat, a place to live, status of their physical and mental health etc There’s more to life than doom and gloom.😁
