Forrest backs tech to reveal ocean inhabitants from a bucket of water | PeteMilne4

The world’s oceans are troubled by plastic pollution, overfishing and a warming climate, but it is hard to save them if scientists know little of what lives there.

The first step is to extract DNA – the molecule inside cells that contains the genetic information that makes every form of life unique – from samples of ocean water. The sequence of the DNA – the order of components along the DNA chain – is then identified with the first high-speed DNA sequencing machine on a vessel. The data is then transmitted to Perth to complete the analysis.Burnell said the process allowed almost real-time identification of species near where the sample was taken.

“But in the same way, it can be used for negative reasons, it can be used to find the last fish and fish them out,” he said.
