A California teenager and former trans child who was permitted to have a double mastectomy at 15 years old is fighting to end child transition procedures , after being ostracised by the trans community.
“I really didn't have any issues beforehand that weren't out of the ordinary for an awkward, tomboyish adolescent girl. Upon de-transitioning, and as she matured, Ms Cole was able to reflect on less severe ways to manage her feelings of discomfort with being a girl – a conclusion she was unable to reach as a teen given the sheer amount of medical and surgical intervention during her youth.
It found the evidence on which recommendations for managing gender dysphoria were made was “built on shaky foundations”. “I want to warn the Government of Australia and the people of Australia about something that's not only happened to me, but something that is actively happening in your own communities," Ms Cole said.
According to reports from the Women’s and Children's Hospital, three children aged between three and five years old received services between March 2022 and March 2024.Until April of this year, the clinic received a total of 285 referrals for children under 18, noting that some of these referrals were for the same patients.
