Former Queensland corrections boss says government ignoring experts on youth crime

Queensland's former corrective services boss says "urgent " change is needed to deal with youth crime in the state, and expert voices are being ignored for political gain.A letter written by prominent experts has called for the government to follow "evidence-based" adviceThe government today announced a new youth crime task force aimed at deterring offenders

"We are organisations and individuals concerned about preventing youth crime, reducing re-offending and achieving community safety," the letter said. "We are talking about 600 or so young people across Queensland, and we are talking about people from very disadvantaged backgrounds," she said.Youth Advocacy Centre CEO Katherine Hayes says the issue is containable.Mr Hamburger is calling for the government to urgently implement a justice reform office, which he said was recommended by the Queensland Productivity Commission in 2019.

Mr Hamburger said the model would "greatly reduce crime", but said the ministers would not even talk to him about it.

When children are exposed from an early age to domestic violence, a number of child protective factors, neglect, physical abuse, sexual harm, those issues impact on many of these young children and regardless of race they should be removed from this environment

Nonsense, we need to concentrate on keeping law-abiding citizens safe. The only way to do that is to lock the criminals up young & old. Once these other methods are proven to work, who knows, maybe we can release all prisoners & shut the jails down. I'm not confident, though. 🤔

There is absolutely no way that the problem of youth crime is limited to 600 offenders in Queensland.

What government

Government might be more proactive if corrections focused more on actually correcting.
