Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Matildas job | VinceRugari

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville has emerged as a shock contender for the vacant Matildas job as Football Federation Australia's search for a new coach narrows down.

The English Football Association has already decided not to extend the contract of Neville, who has been coach of the England team since 2018 and was to guide Great Britain through this year's postponed Tokyo Olympics.Neville had eyed a move into club football after the expiry of his England deal next year buthas touted the Matildas post as a "convenient" way for him to make an early exit, which would suit both parties.

Other reports suggest Ellis' asking price is too high for the FA - and that, in turn, would presumably put her out of reach of the Matildas given FFA's financial struggles pre- and post-COVID.Since stepping down from the US national team role, Ellis has continued to work for US Soccer as development director.claimed last week that Ellis was earning more than AU$620,000 as US coach, and that her salary demands had stalled talks between her and the FA.

Independent inquiry launched into 'toxic culture' within ADF | Sky News AustraliaChief of the Defence Force Angus Campbell has called on former naval officer and Anglican Bishop Tom Frame to conduct an inquiry into the toxic culture in elements of the ADF ahead of the release of a war crimes report.\n\nThe report will examine the ethical standards upheld by elite ranks among the ADF dating back to 1999 with a focus on the war against al-Qa'ida in Afghanistan.\n\nMr Frame will examine the context the alleged breaches occurred under and is expected to release his findings in mid-2022.\n\nThe internal inquiry follows the Inspector-General's war crimes report which examined 55 alleged breaches of the laws of war including the killing of unarmed men and children and the mistreatment of unarmed prisoners during the 13-year deployment of troops in Afghanistan.\n\nOne of the suggested reasons for a toxic culture within the ADF was soldiers and SAS and Commando regiments were sent back for tours of duty too many times - some deployed to up to six or seven tours - which affected the mental health of many servicemen.\n\nThe report is expected to be received very poorly by the Australian public.\n\nImage: News Corp Australia A former Naval officer and former Anglican Bishop to the Defence Force to head up the inquiry.
