| Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe has reportedly been shot while giving an election speech on Friday.Mr Abe collapsed and was bleeding while giving a speech in the central Japanese city of Nara after behind shot in the chest at around 1130 , broadcaster NHK said.
Police arrested a man who is believed to have shot the former prime minister and are holding him on suspicion off attempted murder. His hawkish stance on China and long-running but failed efforts to mend relations with Russia have made him a divisive figure in Japan. Mr Abe has been instrumental in Japan’s shift away from its post World War Two pacifist defence position and supported having US nuclear weapons on Japanese soil.
His signature economic policy known as “Abenomics” were implemented in 2012 as he spearheaded efforts to lead Japan out of decades of economic stagnation.
