Former ABC and Nine News political editor Chris Uhlmann is joining News Corp’s conservative news channel Sky News Australia.
Joining as political contributor, Uhlmann will not host his own program on the Murdoch-owned network but will instead report and offer analysis on the channel’s other news and commentary programming. He will also produce and report on his own documentaries and investigations.“I have been in direct competition with Sky in the past when I helped establish ABC News 24 back in 2010. They’re a difficult organisation to keep pace with,” he said.
“Many have noted the network also encourages robust, opinionated debate. So robust, it allowed commentators like Peta Credlin and Chris Kenny to passionately prosecute opposite sides of the Voice debate. Sky stands tall in the Australian media landscape. You may not agree with it, but you can’t ignore it.”
Uhlmann is one of Australia’s most experienced journalists. He was a producer for Jon Faine on ABC Radio Melbourne, before being appointed chief political correspondent for the ABC’s radio programming. In 2017, he joined the Nine Network as its political editor following the retirement of Laurie Oakes. He left Nine in 2022.Sky News chief executive Paul Whittaker said Uhlmann bolstered Sky’s news line-up, having covered some of the biggest stories in Australian political history.
“We’re delighted Chris joins our unrivalled political team to provide our viewers with astute analysis and thought-provoking commentary, backed by sharp political instincts and an intricate understanding of the machinations of government.”Sky reshuffled its evening run sheet at the beginning of 2024, with Sharri Markson’s program shifting into the prime-time slot of 8pm. Kenny was moved forward to 5pm. The network also launched a new streaming service.
