The 24 Hour of Le Mans is the Olympics of motor racing, says 1998’s winner, who admits “you don’t really care” about risk when there are so many other things to think about.

Already a subscriber? When asked to name the greatest sports car race in the world Stéphane Ortelli, who has competed in almost all the major modern events, doesn’t hesitate.

Ortelli, 54, competed at Le Mans 15 times between 1995 and 2011. He won outright with Porsche, came second with Audi and raced with Bentley, Peugeot and French maker Oreca. He says the teamwork aspect is particularly rewarding. Although he has driven in the marquee long-distance events at Spa, Nürburgring, Bathurst and Sebring, Ortelli says for atmosphere, tension and top speed, the French enduro is in a class of its own. He has hit over 370 km/h in qualifying on the circuit’s famous Mulsanne Straight and, in races, exceeded 350 km/h at night.“No, I think I’m calm inside.
