“It’s important that we listen to Pacific leaders - they want more action. And I’ve been very open in saying I don’t think 43 per cent is enough,” Pocock told ABC Radio this morning. “But there is a community expectation that we do legislate for something. We need certainty for investment and for our community and actually get on the path of being good international citizens, showing some leadership here in the Pacific.

“We’re seeing the effects of climate change and at the same time, the economics of climate action are changing so fast. We need to be able to ratchet this up over time.State of the Environment report was just so clear that this cuts across every part of Australia. This is affecting every ecosystem, every part of our way of life here in Australia, and it needs to be taken into account when we’re actually looking at the effect that projects are going to have on species.”
