Roads north of Sydney are closed due to flooding, and the BOM issues a severe weather warning for almost the entire NSW coast amid a massive downpour that has seen some areas already receive 266mm of rain.

Since 9:00am yesterday, the BOM recorded 266mm in Byron Bay and over 165mm in Coffs Harbour on the Mid-North Coast.

"So we'll start to see the focus of that rain through southern parts of the Mid-North Coast, Hunter and then into Sydney and Illawarra going into tonight."
