Weather forecasters say up to 100mm of rain is possible in some parts of NSW over coming hours.

Sydney is waking to another day of heavy rain, with residents across New South Wales warned to prepare for flooding and possible evacuations.

"Scattered six-hourly rainfall totals between 40mm and 60mm are likely with isolated totals around 100mm possible. Scattered 24-hourly rainfall totals between 75mm and 100mm are also likely with isolated totals around 130mm possible," the bureau said. There are also concerns the Warragamba Dam, 65km west of Sydney, could spill over the next 24 hours because the catchment has had so much rain.
