The first victims of the White Island volcano eruption have arrived for treatment in Melbourne and Sydney. The disaster is putting enormous pressure on burns units across New Zealand and Australia

"Once the patient is stabilised, for people with massive burns there is then a long period of surgery, wound management, dressings, multiple surgeries, and often a long stay in an intensive care unit and also in hospital, so often weeks to months in acute care facilities."

"Our focus is on ensuring the best clinical care for those injured, and support for their immediate family during this difficult time," Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said. A further two patients were planned to be repatriated later on Thursday on the remaining C-130J Hercules aircraft.
