PALM Scheme,Vanuatu,Aged Care

The first ni-Vanuatu workers to join the aged-care sector in Australia have graduated and elderly residents say their carers are 'a blessing'.

Aged-care resident Edith Milne smiles as she holds the hand of ni- Vanuatu worker, Malikon Joe, who is singing a traditional song from her Pacific Island home.

The ni-Vanuatu workers hold hands with aged care residents at Port Macquarie's St Agnes House while they sing to them."I miss my family, but the thing that is in my mind is I need to be a strong woman to be here for my family in Vanuatu and these elderly people," Malikon says. "They bring a joy and harmony to the world that is unbelievable. They bring heart, they bring love, they bring care, and respect," she says."They bring that back, and give that in spades to the older people in their care.""The Vanuatu girls are just the absolutely best in the world … they take their work very seriously and we have a ball," Thelma says.

Edith Milne says it's a blessing having the ni-Vanuatu workers at her aged care home in Port Macquarie. But she says they are focused on long-term gains, using their Australian income to help support their families in Vanuatu and gaining skills they will use when they return home. "I miss my family a lot, but I normally talk to them every day and I send money back home to make sure there is food on the table and they are happy, and for that I am very grateful.""We love them … they love people who smile and talk kindly to them," she says. The first group of PALM scheme workers from Vanuatu to work in aged care at their recent graduation in Port Macquarie.
