'I love you. We've been overrun by fire. Truck on fire': Firefighter sends goodbye text to his family, thinking he would die

Her son, Rhys Outred, 28, sent the message as a goodbye to his family, thinking he wouldn't survive.

Kayle Barton, the deputy captain of the Terrigal NSW Fire and Rescue crew, radioed for assistance attempting to make contact through multiple channels. He eventually got a response from one of the local fire and rescue channels.Together, the crew decided it was too dangerous to stay inside the truck while it was on fire. They discussed how they would exit the vehicle into the extreme heat and fire as the toxic smoke became overwhelming in the cabin.

"We have been overrun, our trucks will not move. Our trucks are catching alight. We need immediate assistance ... We are sheltering in the vehicle. We do not know how much longer we will be able to shelter. The main fire front has passed - we are considering using BA [breathing apparatus] to go out on foot," Mr Barton said.

"I remember just opening the door and seeing him. And as a mother, you know, I couldn't hold him any tighter. My heart was against his heart and I was saying 'It's a mother's love, you're here.'

Fears Queensland rural firefighter numbers will plummet over blue card demandQueensland's firefighting leaders fear some rural stations will be left near empty with more than half of all volunteers yet to get a blue card, which are required from April this year. What has working with children got to do with firefighting? Queensland Labor Government is clearly broke and in debt up to their heads. What is the justification for this? Will plumbers, electricians, installers, etc need blue cards as well? Lets face they must pose similar risks when working around family homes.

CapTel steps in to keep text-captioned telephones runningA US service provider behind text-captioning telephones for Australia's deaf community is keeping the service running despite the Federal Government declining to renew its contract. It's so instructive watching this govt making decisions about money. Something which supports communication for hearing impaired? Too expensive. Rort to buy votes? Remote detention centre to house 2 adults and 2 children? How much do you want? He really is a CrimeMinister It's quite apparent that the users of the CapTel service will need to move to marginal seats in order to have the relatively measly funding renewed. disability sportsrorts corruption auspol
