Large plumes of smoke are billowing from a derelict bowling club in Sydney's inner west, with fire crews racing to get the blaze under control.

Emergency services were called to the structure on Hythe Street, Drummoyne, at 1.30pm. There are 10 fire crews on scene.Greater Western Sydney Giants player Harry Himmelberg was returning from a run when he saw the smoke. "The flames were pretty high, I could see them over the top of trees, they were about five metres above the roof," he said. "It's quite smoky now."Last year, a development application was put before the City of Canada Bay council for a three- to five-storey residential building, with 65 apartments.
