BREAKING: The developers who illegally demolished Carlton's Corkman pub have had their fine cut from almost $2m to $1.09m, in a decision the planning spokesman says lets “these cowboy developers get away with the heist of the century.'

The developers who illegally knocked down Carlton’s Corkman hotel have had their penalties for the demolition cut in half by the County Court from almost $2 million to $1.1 million.

The pair bought the pub for $4.7 million in 2015. Savills state director Clinton Baxter said the empty site was now worth between $8 million and $10 million. “They made a commercial calculation,” Judge Wraight said, which would allow them to build a 12-storey tower on the site once the historic pub was gone.

Angry

They should be Fined the REPLACEMENT COST or at LEAST Double the Council LAND VALUATION to ensure there is No advantage if they decide to OnSell the Land

Setting a precedent for the developers. Meanwhile council cracks down on Mum and dads doing renovations. Developers win with the attitude- just knock it down and see what happens

Having been fined the lower sum, these clowns should be ordered to turn the site into an urban oasis of native flora and fauna.

F:($ed

It’s about time our courts were held to account for such decisions. There was no good reason the cut the penalties. Once again big business runs riot

They should be jailed

so an ugly building has been demolished. what's the problem?

Daniel Andrews apathetic government!! Property Developer's are ruling the roost! Why do we have Government regulatory authorities? As it is apparent that they are doing nothing to protect consumers from greedy unscrupulous property developers

Not surprised - never surprised anymore. Just a joke, that’s what the system is!

So who bribed who? Disgusting!

No wonder governments can not make money.

They must have some gun lawyers. The longer this has dragged on the easier it gets for these fuckers

Out comes the wet lettuce leaf. What an absolute joke!

No not acceptable it should have been more

beggars belief

Disgraceful. These vandals should be paying a fine which is multiples of the potential profit, not a fraction. Where is the disincentive if the fine can be written off as just another project cost? Another failure of the courts.

So asbestos illegally demolished near a school, transported & dumped equals nothing. No worries to bad every one just suck in these fibres 💀

Bloody disgrace

This is an easy fix: Fine them and seize the land. Won’t happen again. This is just a development cost to them.

It should have been $4 million and ten years.

Thats just disgraceful.

😳😡😡😡 Encouraged by the courts to benefit from the proceeds of their crime

Soft

if was the CFMEU,It would Be extended to $4m,Builders or even any Business mostly free to do at they please, like PM Mr Morrison Coalition Gov,mostly unconditionally defends, excuses protecting, dodgy, misconducting or corruption.freecowboy Tower builder year Old got away owners pay

Criminals are treated better than law abiding citizens. How good is Straya?

Bloody unbelievable 😡

Bullshit

This entire saga says so much about what Melbourne has become in 2019.

slsandpet And, such a crime should also mean forfeiture of the property

slsandpet Sod that for a joke. Punish them properly. Get an independent builder to rebuild it, and the shonks to pay.

No one is shocked

Who took a bribe?

Not sure if they will still get there money 💰

Does that mean I can halve my speeding fine, the fine I received for cutting down a dangerous tree over my house, nahhh it’s so they can build more shonky units that are lucky to last three years

We need a royal commission into the Australian justice system

Truly sucks

Meanwhile I can’t build my family home in Carlton bc of all the heritage overlays. Maybe I should just knock the house down and accept the fine which will end up cheaper than hiring the relevant people to fight the Melbourne city council at VCAT.

Still havnt figured out who runs Australia yet? Hint, it’s not the LiberalAus, it’s developers and mining industries with a complicit media. We are a kleptocracy, far removed from any form of representative government auspol.

If only their foreign sounding names were Sudanese ones so we could deport them

Disgraceful

Rezone the land single storey commercial. That will wipe the smile off their faces.

What a soft government... crooks, criminals and thugs in Victoria have it way too easy

That is ok, if you have a speeding fine they will chase you down until they totally screw you over and get their money but hey white collar crime does not matter

Kyle's Hilux spewed out so much smoke, authorities threatened to fine her for pollutionProblems with diesel particulate filters in top-selling Toyota cars have exposed Australia's 'lagging' vehicle emissions standards, advocates say. More Toyotas on the road than anything else, no wonder their figures are highest. The DPF is a failed emissions device design inflicted on us by our Govt. The problem is short trips. These particulate filters will only work at a certain temperature. There was another person with a car, that had an overheating problem...maybe cover that tomorrow.

Australian writer pays $100k for beer at UK pub during the AshesPeter Lalor claims to have been charged for &x27;the most expensive beer in history&x27; after a billing mix-up saw him lose almost $100,000 to a quick beverage. It was $10k earlier. Fact check I believe it was 55 pounds. It should have been 5 pounds 50 P Something doesn't ring quite true here. Even really big credit card users would have a daily limit of $20,000, $25,000. And the bank paid out $100,,000 on a bar request? Why didn't the hotel manager instantly reverse it?
