A draft national plan for managing the spread of feral deer seeks to limit their numbers, geographic spread and reduce the number of accidents involving motorists and cyclists, but not to completely eradicate them.

Feral deer numbers increased in the 1990s following a decline in the venison and velvet market.abc.net.au/news/national-feral-deer-action-plan-released/101812114A national plan for managing the spread of feral deer seeks to limit population numbers, geographic spread and reduce the number of accidents involving motorists and cyclists, but avoids eradication.

"In New South Wales, the six species of feral deer now inhabit 22 per cent of the state, where their distribution has spread by 35 per cent since 2016." "It also prioritises the need to protect significant sites that we have got from the impact of feral deer, including some of the World Heritage areas we have got around wetlands," Dr Wiebkin said.

"And certainly I think in peri-urban and urban areas really careful trapping and shooting on the ground is going to be the way to go."For decades, feral Rusa deer emanating from the Royal National Park on the southern boundary of Sydney have encroached on neighbouring communities in the Sutherland Shire and northern Illawarra. The National Parks and Wildlife Service hopes to vastly step up its deer eradication programs within the park.

every blade of grass eaten by Feral deer and hogs is less for cattle production. is it not great you have to wait for gov't to give ya'll permission. why not have ranches set up hunting /no limit deer hunting. process meat for those in need. only charge hunters room and board.

Target practice for the SAS

Not good enough

venison steak lets harvest them for food healthy and tasty deer

Have they done the science to know that the 'manageable' level of deer is benign for native species and ecosystems? Bet not. Nature conservation in Australia is bedevilled by lack of political will which, in turn, delivers inadequate resources to do anything meaningful.

Want to control the deer? Monetise them and make a path to selling wild venison as a lower cost meat than beef and lamb. Coles Lamb Leg Roast HalfColes Lamb Leg Roast Half approx. 1.74kg on special $20.88 save $5.22 approx. 1.74kg Unit Price$12.00 per 1Kg
